A new one will be elected on September 26th. But how does voting actually work?
All Germans who are at least 18 years old on election day will receive a voting notification a few weeks in advance. For some, it might already be in the mailbox.
This note contains some information and very important – the responsible polling station. Don’t forget your ID or passport on election day.
But if you want to vote by postal vote, for example, you have to apply for the documents beforehand. The municipality is also responsible for this.
By the way, the Chancellor is not directly elected in. You vote for MPs, who in turn elect the head of government later in the Bundestag.
When choosing, you can then put two crosses. With the first vote, you choose a candidate directly who runs in the relevant constituency.
In the case of the second vote, there are parties to choose from. The nationwide share of these votes determines how strongly a party will later be represented in parliament.
