Santos Silva defends enlargement revision of European Union’s institutional architecture

The President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, said this Wednesday that the process of the European Union’s (EU) eastward enlargement will trigger a revision of the “institutional architecture of Europe” that needs to be rethought “in the light of rationality”.

“We can’t think of this extension [a leste] without rethinking the engineering of our union, namely at the financial and budgetary level,” Santos Silva said during a lunchtime debate on “Portugal and the Future of European Institutions” organized by the International Club of Portugal today in Lisbon.

For the ex-head of Portuguese diplomacy, the process of EU enlargement to the east, including the integration of Ukraine, brings many benefits to the community, but it must be treated “very rationally”, as it implies serious consequences for the very idea from Europe.
