The President of Mozambique defended this Wednesday the dialogue between Ukraine and Russia on ending the war during a telephone conversation with his counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, the president’s office in Maputo said.
Filipe Nyusi urged “Ukraine and Russia to return to a direct dialogue and with humility seek another solution to the war,” Mozambique’s president said in a statement.
In a conversation with Zelensky that lasted more than half an hour, Nyusi “expressed regret and expressed solidarity over the loss of more than ten thousand lives” and “more than twelve million displaced people, as well as the destruction of infrastructure” in Ukraine.
The head of the Mozambican state justified the “abstention regarding the war between Russia and Ukraine” at the United Nations by “a position derived from the Constitution of the Republic and foreign policy that advocates the solution of disputes through dialogue.”
He also said that “Mozambique defends respect for international humanitarian law, human rights and the protection of victims of war and armed conflict,” the statement said.
Ukraine was one of the countries that voted a month ago to elect Mozambique for a rotating seat of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council – the Portuguese-speaking country received all 192 possible votes – and the Portuguese speaker thanked the head of state this Wednesday.
Zelensky “congratulated Mozambique on the election” and gave an overview of the Russian invasion, adding that he wanted to “explain to African countries in an appropriate forum” the security situation and address the economic and commercial aspects, an intention Newsi welcomes.
“The two rulers also pledged to consult and mutually support each other in the performance of their functions and in the need to guarantee international security,” the statement said.
Mozambique was among the countries that abstained from voting on two resolutions of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly: one condemned Russia for the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine due to the war, and the other barred it from participation in the Human Rights Council. .
