This Friday, the coordinator of the Left Bloc told the Lusa news agency that she expects “convergence in several areas” at the meeting of the European left in Aveiro, namely on health, crisis and inflation.
“We are going through a moment of serious attack on human rights, a moment of attack on democracy, and it is normal that this is an important moment for reflection and action on the left,” Katarina Martins defended.
Speaking to the Lusa agency on the sidelines of the first session of the Sementeira Cultural Week in Viseu, the blockist leader considered it important to meet in Aveiro this weekend, where one of the focuses will be “a difficult moment with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.”
But also “a NATO agreement in which European countries abandoned the principles of human rights in order for Turkey to accept them”, and even “other crises” that affect Portugal as well as Europe.
Among these crises, he pointed out the climate, the crisis of current and future life, as well as “the progress that is being observed in Portugal and throughout Europe in the destruction of public services, namely health care.”
“Private medical groups around the world are organizing to parasitize public health systems, and they are the ones who have responded to COVID-19,” he said both in Portugal and across Europe.
And in doing so, he noted, “they have become very fragile and, in effect, governments are giving way to private health care because they are not strengthening public health systems, and this is a problem that is spreading across Europe.”
“Of course, the inflationary crisis. Prices are rising, but wages are not. This is happening all over Europe, in Portugal it is especially serious because we have the highest prices in Europe in some sectors, such as fuel and housing, and wages are lower,” he added.
At the end of the meeting, Katarina Martins expressed her hope that “there will be many overlaps” in these areas, as well as “in climate”, namely in the field of energy, as well as “materials in the control of housing prices”. , which is a problem that has gripped Europe.”
