The Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, was awarded the Cross of Sao Jorge medal on Monday for his “commitment” to “promoting and maintaining excellent institutional relationships” between the municipality and the armed forces.
This Friday, the Chamber of Porto told the Lusa news agency that the decision to award the independent mayor was made by the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Admiral António Silva Ribeiro.
The award is given in recognition of Rui Moreira’s commitment to “promoting and maintaining an excellent institutional relationship” between the municipality and the armed forces, “to encourage and support, with a very high sense of public service, activities that enhance the prestige of the military institution.” in the Northern region, with mutual benefit for both parties, ”the municipality emphasizes.
The San Jorge Cross Medal is designed to reward combatants and civilians, national or foreign, who demonstrate high competence, outstanding ability and relevant personal qualities, making a significant contribution to the effectiveness, prestige and mission accomplishment of the armed forces.
The award, presented by the General Staff of the Armed Forces, will be presented at a military ceremony to be held on Monday in Terreiro da Sé at 10:00.
The ceremony is presided over by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and commemorates the entry of the liberal army into the city of Porto.
