Former Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos has died at the age of 79. The information was made public this Friday by the President of Angola.
The statement said José Eduardo dos Santos passed away “at 11:10 am in Barcelona after a long illness.” The former president of Angola spent several weeks in intensive care in the hospital. The Republic of Angola expresses its deepest feelings of grief to the family of the deceased and calls on everyone to remain calm at this moment of pain and horror,” the statement said.
José Eduardo dos Santos was born on August 28, 1942 in Luanda, Angola. The most famous of the Van Dunems – a middle name inherited from a family branch started by a Dutch merchant – joined the MPLA when it was created in 1956. With the declaration of independence of Angola on November 11, 1975, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. and in 1979 he was elected President of the People’s Republic of Angola. José Eduardo Van Dunem dos Santos remained in power until 2017, a path marked by constant allegations of corruption and the diversion of oil resources, mostly from the Cabinda enclave.
