Chancellor Scholz is repeatedly criticized for his Ukraine policy. According to his own statement, however, he is not deterred by this. Instead, he uses a different strategy.
According to his own statement, Chancellor Olaf Scholz does not pay much attention to poll numbers and public criticism in the current crisis. “This is a time when it’s not about: what’s in the newspaper tomorrow, what’s the next poll like? But: What are we doing for security and what are we doing for peace in Europe?” said the SPD politician on Monday evening at a citizens’ dialogue in Lübeck.
In view of the Russian war against Ukraine one should “really do nothing wrong”. “Trial and error” is the wrong approach here. “An error, a mistake, in this situation would be terrible,” said Scholz. It is therefore important to remain level-headed and coordinate internationally. Trial and error usually means trying different solutions to a problem until the goal is reached.
Scholz continued: “I think it’s also part of it that when times are very excited, you still remain clear and firm. That you always keep your feet on the ground so that you can be sure that the decision is the right one.” The Chancellor added: “And I can only promise you: I will continue to do so.”
