This Sunday, Chega submitted a draft resolution recommending the eventual establishment of a Parliamentary Inquiry Committee to investigate the causes of the increase in non-COVID deaths between 2020 and 2021.
According to the Chega project, “14% more deaths (15,526) were recorded than would be expected, taking into account the average of the previous six years,” with covid-19 associated with only two of the six death peaks. . Directorate General of Health (DGS) for 2020.
“Report [Mortalidade Geral e por Grandes Grupos de Causas, da DGS] also indicates that in 2020 there were more deaths from diseases of the circulatory system such as strokes – 1618 more than expected – and 45% more deaths from hypertension, without explaining this reason. Therefore, it is important to find an explanation for this increase in unjustified deaths in 2020,” the far-right party document says.
Highlighting some recent news indicating that the country’s all-cause mortality rates are higher than expected for this time of year, the party denounced the authorities’ lack of explanation and demanded the immediate establishment of a commission for a specified period. 120 days, in order to determine the causes of non-covid deaths and determine possible liability.
“It is unacceptable and incomprehensible for health authorities to remain silent in the face of the strange and unusual mortality peak in Portugal, affecting all or almost all age groups, refusing to initiate an investigation or provide credible explanatory data on this matter. (…) It has already become clear and obvious that neither the covid-19 pandemic nor the heat wave that the country is experiencing are sufficient exceptional factors to explain the mortality figures,” Chega deputies note.
