Former government spokesman Steffen Seibert becomes the new German ambassador to Israel. The 62-year-old confirmed this on Monday evening in a video message to the Israeli population on Twitter.
Former government spokesman Steffen Seibert becomes Germany’s new ambassador to Israel. The 62-year-old published a video of himself on Twitter on Monday and introduced himself as the designated ambassador in Tel Aviv.
Seibert was government spokesman under Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) for more than eleven years. He previously worked as a television journalist for ZDF. In Israel, he takes over the post from the previous ambassador, Susanne Wasum-Rainer, who had her last day of work there at the end of June.
Steffen Seibert speaks of “special friendship between Israel and Germany”
Seibert spoke in Hebrew and English in the two-minute video. After the “monstrous crimes of the Shoah,” Germany and Israel now share a special friendship.
“After the barbarism and monstrous crimes, friendship with Israel is not something we Germans can take for granted,” he said. Today, Germany and Israel are “partners and friends,” according to the former government spokesman. “For us Germans, for me personally, that means so much.”
“We have learned the lessons of our history,” assured Seibert. “One of the most important lessons is to stand by the State of Israel and be committed to its security.” The “Süddeutsche Zeitung” reported in March that the former journalist was to become the new ambassador to Israel.
