Marcelo praised the role of the military in the history of the country during a ceremony in Porto

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, warned this Monday at a solemn ceremony marking the 190th anniversary of the entry of the Liberal Army into Porto that there can be no “true freedom” without “health, education and social solidarity”.

“Without freedom, freedom of thought, freedom of action, freedom of speech, freedom of choice and control over those who represent us, each person is not respected, but without rights, health, education, social solidarity, without condemning poverty, there is no true freedom,” the President said.

The head of state also highly appreciated the role of the military in the history of the country. “Revolutions, like civil wars, are marked by moments of change, and in those moments our Armed Forces have always been present,” Marcelo emphasized, adding that “when they fought for freedom against what forbade it, they knew how to retreat in order to become its guarantors, not its owners.
