The Bundeswehr has expanded its evacuation mission in Afghanistan. Two H145M light multipurpose helicopters arrived in Kabul on Saturday night. The Bundeswehr has relocated two helicopters to Kabul in order to have more options for evacuations.
It is planned to use the agile helicopters in Kabul to “pick up smaller groups to be evacuated in the city and transport them safely to the airport,” said the Bundeswehr. According to Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU), the helicopters can only be used on site in coordination with the Americans and the other partner countries.
Further details were initially not given. The situation at the airport in the Afghan capital remains tense. Thousands of people are still trying to leave the country after it was controlled by the Taliban for almost a week. Meanwhile, there are increasing reports of violence against women and people who have worked with foreign organizations. The Taliban pledged to investigate acts of violence among their ranks. A representative of the radical Islamic group said on Saturday that one would take responsibility for any acts of retaliation and atrocities if they were perpetrated by their own fighters.
