The President of the United States, who is traveling to Saudi Arabia this week, said in a Washington Post article on Saturday that he intends to “strengthen a strategic partnership based on mutual interests and responsibilities while respecting fundamental American values.”
“I know that many do not agree with the decision to go to Saudi Arabia. My stance on human rights is clear and unwavering, and fundamental freedoms are always on the agenda when I travel, and they will be during this trip of mine,” Joe Biden assured in the text.
Ahead of his election to the White House, Biden vowed to turn the oil monarchy into a “rogue state” following the 2018 assassination of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at Saudi consultations in Istanbul.
In the trip, scheduled for Wednesday and Saturday, Biden will first travel to Israel and then meet with Palestinian Authority leaders in the occupied West Bank before traveling to the Saudi city of Jeddah for a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and other Arab leaders gathered at the regional summit.
