A 54-year-old man suspected of setting fire on Tuesday in the Santiago do Escural district, in the municipality of Montemor o Novo (Évora), was detained by the GNR, a source in the force said. Lusa security.
According to the same source, “a popular man saw a man set fire” in the Santiago do Escural area, apprehended the suspect and called the GNR, who dispatched a patrol to the scene, making the arrest.
The suspect will be present on Wednesday at the Montemor-o-Novo Judicial Court for a first judicial questioning and possible coercive action, a GNR source said.
Contacting Lusa, Évora’s District Command for Relief Operations (CDOS) explained that the alert was raised at 18:56 due to a fire near this locality in the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo.
At 7:32 p.m., the fire that engulfed pastures and olive groves was ruled out, according to a CDOS source.
44 operatives, mostly firefighters from Montemor-o-Novo, Viana do Alentejo and Évora corporations, were involved in extinguishing the fire, supported by 13 vehicles and an aircraft.
