Energy: Expansion of onshore wind turbines in Germany is stagnating

In the first half of this year, 238 new wind turbines were installed – almost as many as in the same period last year. In order to be able to achieve the expansion goals, five times the volume is required. The call for more bills is getting louder.

The expansion of wind turbines on land in Germany is stagnating. In the first half of 2022, 238 new wind turbines with a total output of 977 megawatts were installed – about as much as in the same period last year.

This was announced by the German Wind Energy Association and the VDMA Power Systems trade association. In order to be able to achieve the expansion goals, five times the volume is needed.

Because old plants were also shut down, the so-called net increase in the first half of the year was 878 megawatts, slightly more than in the previous year.

The Bundestag and Bundesrat recently decided on an extensive package of measures for a faster expansion of green electricity from wind and sun. This plays a central role in being able to achieve climate goals and becoming less dependent on fossil fuels such as Russian gas.

“We urgently expect further bills to strengthen and accelerate more areas and permits,” says Dennis Rendschmidt, Managing Director of VDMA Power Systems. The European manufacturers of wind turbines and their suppliers are under considerable economic pressure due to cost increases and insufficient market dynamics. “If the market volume is too low, there is a risk of losing know-how, added value and employment.” The wind turbine manufacturer Nordex had announced that it would close its rotor blade production in Rostock.
