Chega promised this Thursday to insist, not to mention how, that an urgent debate in Parliament over the fires in the country take place on Friday or Monday.
This position was taken by the Chega parliamentary group in a statement after it was learned that the President of the Assembly of the Republic (AR) sent to the conference of leaders on the 20th the schedule of extraordinary debates requested by Friday’s party.
An official source from the Office of the President of the AR told Lusa that Augusto Santos Silva determined that the next conference of leaders, on the 20th, “will decide with a view to organizing debates and adjusting the order on July 21st.” in the expectation that the debate required by Chega could take place that day.
In a statement, the party bench criticized the AR President for “denying the possibility of an urgent discussion of the topic of fires this Friday.”
While not specifically talking about how he intends to overrule Santos Silva’s order, Chega says that “he will ask tonight” to change the decision and that he will insist on “an urgent debate” on Friday or Monday, given the urgency of the topic.
In a statement, Chega argued that the plenary sessions were not suspended and that the legal regime for urgent debate (Article 72 Regiment) “does not reflect the breadth of the time” that Santos Silva wants to “leave until the debate is over.”
A few hours earlier, in a video message, Chega President Andre Ventura announced that he intended to schedule an emergency debate on the fires as early as this Friday, given that Parliament “cannot be tied to fixed schedules or suspensions.” “and it ‘should be open’ for the Portuguese.
However, no plenary session is scheduled for Friday, following a meeting approved in June that determined the extension of the normal parliamentary period until 29 July, allowing plenary sessions to continue until 8 and 20 July. and the 21st of the current month.
By order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the deputy groups were informed that, in accordance with Article 72 of the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly of the Republic, the appointment of urgent debates necessary for Chege can be made on one of the plenary days, the 20th or 21st, and the 20th is already reserved for annual debates on the state of the nation, and therefore the next conference of parliamentary leaders should schedule the debates demanded by André Ventura’s party.
Article 72 of the Standing Orders of the Assembly of the Republic provides that an urgent debate shall be held “immediately after the close of business hours, without prejudice to the existence of political statements by parties intending to exercise this right”.
In a request addressed to PAR, Chega parliamentary leader Pedro Pinto admitted, by way of exception, that the debate would take place next Monday, on a day when there would also be no plenary session.
