The BE coordinator announced this Thursday the cancellation of the “Acampamento Liberdade”, an initiative of young people from the Bloc in the center of the country who had a negative opinion from the Civil Protection because the security conditions were not met.
In a video message posted on BE’s social media, Katarina Martins said that BE cooperated with the authorities to ensure the safety of the event, but, she added, “in the end, the Civil Protection considers that these conditions are not met,” so the camp was cancelled.
“We must cancel for the safety of all people and in solidarity with those who are fighting fires across the country,” said Katarina Martins, expressing her hope that this initiative will return soon, since it was not carried out personally. since 2019 due to the pandemic.
“We will find other places to have fun and step up the fight for climate justice,” he added.
The initiative is due to start this Thursday and run until Monday at Campismo de São Gião, at the Oliveira do Hospital (Coimbra).
The registration site promised “four days of debate, wrestling, camaraderie, music, dancing and partying.”
Part of the debate was intervened by MP Mariana Mortagua and Councilor in Lisbon Beatriz Gómez Diaz on Friday, parliamentary leader Pedro Filipe Soares on Saturday and coordinator Catarina Martins on Sunday.
Also today, Chega announced the cancellation of her summer festival, which is due to take place from the 29th to the 31st of the month, because “it is impossible to predict in advance what the weather situation will be like.”
In a statement, the far-right party justifies the cancellation with “a scenario of fires devastating the country” and a government declaration of a state of emergency until Sunday.
The government today decided to extend the state of emergency on the Portuguese mainland from Friday to Sunday due to weather forecasts where temperatures in parts of the country could exceed 45º and the risk of wildfires.
An emergency situation corresponds to the second level of response provided for in the Law on Civil Protection and is declared when, due to the occurrence or threat of a serious accident or catastrophe, it becomes necessary to take preventive and / or special response measures that cannot be mobilized at the municipal level recognized.
