The US military base Ramstein in Rhineland-Palatinate has become the first stopover for many people who are flown out of Afghanistan. US soldiers have set up more than 70 tents on site, up to 10,000 people from Afghanistan are to be temporarily accommodated until they can continue, for example to the USA. The federal government had agreed to temporarily accommodate the people at the air base. After an initial medical examination, a three-day corona quarantine begins. On one of the flights, an Afghan woman gave birth on board shortly after landing in Ramstein, the US Air Force said. She gave birth to a baby girl in the hold of a C-17. Mother and child are doing well. According to the White House, a total of over 25,000 people have been evacuated since August 14. Almost 4,000 US military aircraft were flown from Kabul to various intermediate locations within 24 hours at the weekend. They have been taken to a dozen countries outside Afghanistan, to Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia.
