Is all of Afghanistan in the hands of the Taliban? Not quite. The Punjir Valley in the east of the country is still resisting, and NATO troops are in charge at the airport in the capital, Kabul. At least still. The Western powers want as many people as possible to have flown out by August 31: their compatriots, local workers and other Afghans who want or have to flee the Taliban.
But the security situation is getting worse. There have already been deaths in the crowd in front of the gates, and strangers have already attacked the airport. German soldiers were also involved in the defensive battle.
Almost 30,000 people flown out of Kabul
The Bundeswehr has meanwhile flown more than 2,700 people from Kabul, including more than 1,800 Afghans. In the case of the British there were almost 6,000; a total of almost 30,000 people have to leave the country with the help of machines belonging to NATO troops.
Speaking of the evacuations, US President Joe Biden said: “We still have a long way to go and a lot can go wrong.” He called the sight of people waiting at the airport “heartbreaking”.
