Parliamentary ‘dead end’ in France could lead Macron to prefer new elections

The French government suffered its first defeat in the National Assembly this week, with a relative majority not enough to approve measures against COVID-19, a “stalemate” that could lead the president to choose to run in new elections.

After five years of an absolute majority, the failure to approve full measures against covid-19 reminded the parties supporting the president that a relative majority is not enough to follow the agenda of Emmanuel Macron and the interests of the government.

Thus, in a method that will often be used in the National Assembly, the opposition banded together and blocked the re-introduction of the “vaccination pass” for anyone who wants to enter French territory, which is disputed even by health experts.
