Rui Moreira announces that Camara will stop supporting the volunteer firefighters of Porto

Porto Mayor Rui Moreira said Monday that the municipality will stop supporting the Porto Volunteer Firefighters until the corporation’s “internal problems” are resolved.

“There will be no support precisely because of the problems that the association has,” independent Rui Moreira said on Monday at a meeting of the executive branch.

The mayor, responding to a question posed by Councilor Maria Manuel Rola of BE (replacing Sérgio Aires), stressed that the decision was “negotiated” with Interior Minister José Luis Carneiro, not least because the support given to the association at the moment ” attached.”

“If the situation is nevertheless resolved, we will return to support,” the independent assured, saying that he could not intervene in the conflict in which the corporation has been living for years.

The adviser in charge of civil protection in the Chamber of Porto, Catarina Araujo, also assured that “the city is not at stake.”

The corporation has been in a situation of accusations from both sides for alleged non-compliance and violations for many years, which meant that in June the barracks was closed due to a lack of staff at the telephone exchange.

On July 5, a professional from this corporation informed Luza that the Porto volunteer firefighters had their accounts confiscated due to non-payment of a debt of about 40,000 euros to the firefighter.

It is about non-compliance with the decision of the Porto Labor Court in a lawsuit filed in 2019 by one of eight firefighters who considered their dismissal “illegal” by this court and the payment of “appropriate compensation”, added Paula Silva.
