The military expert Carlo Masala calls for quick and energetic support for Ukraine in order to prevent the threatening success of the Russian war of aggression – the podcast “Ukraine – the situation”.
Military expert Carlo Masala has called for quick and energetic support for Ukraine in order to prevent Russia’s war of aggression from succeeding. In the stern podcast “Ukraine – the situation” he said that now is “the time to go ‘all in’ again, to make a concerted effort to help Ukraine defend its territory”. Masala warned that in autumn and winter, given the high energy prices, solidarity in Western societies could crumble just as much as the resilience of the Ukrainians directly affected by the war.
Is support tipping in the West?
The politics professor at the Bundeswehr University in Munich continues: “We are approaching a situation that may end in public support in the West tipping over, in the support of Ukrainian society for its president possibly changing. Then we will have a completely new starting point, which we all don’t want because it then plays into the hands of the Russians in possible negotiations about a peace that will then be conducted.”

Masala did not take the dismissal of the Ukrainian intelligence chief and the attorney general as an indication of an internal power struggle. There are also “no signs whatsoever that the support of the population is no longer there to a significant extent”. But of course something is changing in Ukraine as a result of the war. He pointed to the enormous pressure on people in the occupied territories to cooperate with the attackers. “When you are given the choice of being killed or collaborating, many choose to collaborate,” he said.
What are the Ukrainians doing?
It would also be a problematic situation for the West if Ukrainian society refused to follow its leadership “because the costs it has to bear are unacceptably high, even in their view.” Then peace negotiations would have to be held, but they shouldn’t end in such a way that “Russia gets away with its aggression.” He doesn’t see how that can be achieved. “That’s a bit of squaring the circle.”
