Election campaign: “In” Landshut: Laschet is ridiculed for one word too much

The controversy in terms of content in the election campaign is repeatedly pushed into the background by missteps on the part of the candidates. Now Union candidate Laschet is making a new mistake.

CDU / CSU Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet has received ridicule and malice for a little word too much at the start of the Union’s election campaign on the Internet.

In his speech on Saturday, the CDU chairman said that the Federal Police special unit GSG9 had “freed Germans from the hijacked Lufthansa plane IN Landshut” in the autumn of 1977. “Landshut” was just the name of the aircraft at the time. The hostages were released in a spectacular operation in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu.

In the network, Laschet was accused of not knowing any better. The Green MP Canan Bayram wrote on Twitter: “No, Landshut is not in Somalia, dear Union, and yes, you didn’t want a perfect man, you wanted Armin”. Others echoed Laschet’s statement and added tearful smileys. The CDU boss earned further ridicule for speaking of the fact that the Bundeswehr was now in action with Transall machines. She has since retired and is now flying with the Airbus A400M.

The previous federal election campaign was largely determined by personal mistakes by the candidates – for example Laschet’s laugh on the edge of a statement by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier about the flood disaster or mistakes in the CV of Green Chancellor candidate Annalena Baerbock. It is often complained that there is a lack of substantive discussion.
