Montenegro claims a “minimal agreement” on decentralization “between the municipalities and the government”.

SDP President Luis Montenegro classified on Tuesday as a “minimum agreement” the understanding reached on decentralization in health and education, stressing that “this agreement is not between the SDP, but between the municipalities and the government.” “.

At the end of a visit to two projects in the social field in the municipality of Cascais, Luis Montenegro was asked about the agreement approved on Monday by the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP) to decentralize powers with the government, for the areas of education and health, after months of negotiations, counting on votes in favor of the mayors , elected by the PS and SDP, and votes against the mayors of the Communist Party.

“The decentralization process went wrong and was very slow, we had three years to reach this minimum agreement,” Montenegro said.

The social democratic leader emphasized that “this agreement is not between the SDP, but between the ANMP and the government” in areas where there were more serious obstacles, in the areas of education and health.

“It is better to have this general minimum than not to have it. This does not change the fact that the decentralization process still has a long way to go and the delay that has occurred in its implementation,” he criticized.

When asked by journalists whether a date had already been set for a meeting with the prime minister to discuss the future of the airport, Luis Montenegro repeated what he had already publicly stated on Monday: “We will have some news about this in the coming days.”
