As a suspected Putin understander, you are currently not making any friends. Michael Kretschmer also has to find out after Saxony’s Prime Minister had expressed a few ideas about a possible freeze on the Ukraine war.
Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer has gotten himself into serious trouble with a suggestion that Germany should play a mediating role in Russia’s war against Ukraine. The former Ambassador of Ukraine in Germany summed it up most vividly. Andriy Melnyk wrote on Twitter with reference to Kretschmer: “The Ukrainians advocate sticking your head in a freezer to freeze your hot Russia fantasies. Your constant pandering to war criminal Putin is disgusting.”
Melnyk still calls himself “Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany” on Twitter, but was fired by President Volodymyr Zelenskyj a week and a half ago. Previously, he had made some somewhat undiplomatic statements, for example to Chancellor Olaf Scholz, whom he accused of behaving like an “offended liverwurst”.
In Germany, too, Kretschmer’s theses were not particularly well received. FDP General Secretary Bijan Djir-Sarai etched in the “Bild:” Thank God this man is not responsible for our foreign policy.” The Saxon head of government “obviously has not understood to this day how dangerous Russia is and how important support for Russia is Ukraine”. Berlin CDU country chief Kai Wegner wrote on Twitter: “Like Michael Kretschmer, we all want peace, freedom and security in the world. But Michael Kretschmer also knows that this is not possible with the warmonger and war criminal Putin.”
Michael Kretschmer calls for Germany to play a mediating role
Kretschmer demanded on Tuesday that Germany take on the role of mediator in the Ukraine war. The head of government justified this primarily with the size of the country and its history. One was very involved in the European association, but had to play a central role in resolving the conflict together with France, the USA and other countries. “We must work to ensure that this war is frozen.”
This does not mean that Ukraine should give up territories, said Kretschmer. Russia’s war is an injustice and a crime. But one must recognize that the war is throwing the entire world, and Europe in particular, into chaos. If it continues like this, there is a risk of losing the economic strength that is necessary to organize security and remain competitive.
According to Kretschmer, Germany and Europe must clarify their position on this war. He currently understands the statements that firstly it is about winning the war and secondly never to buy raw materials from Russia again. If that is the attitude, there will be no ceasefire negotiations.
“I am firmly convinced that we need these supplies of raw materials. Secondly, I am of the opinion that we must try together (…) to influence the Russian President and also to convince Ukraine that we can all resolve this conflict together have to freeze.
