The Plenum rejected the admission of debates to the Chega project

Parliament confirmed in plenary session this Wednesday the rejection of Cheg’s proposal to impose a sentence of up to 65 years in prison for particularly depraved murders, and the party announced it would appeal to the Constitutional Court.

Moments before the State of the Nation debate began, at Chega’s request, a plenary reading and a new vote by the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees to reject his bill for being unconstitutional took place.

Last week, in a parliamentary committee, Chega was isolated in defense of his appeal on the acceptability of this initiative after the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, refused to accept this draft amendment to the Penal Code. , believing that he clearly violated the Constitution.

After a new refusal, which united all the other parties, at the plenary session, Chairman Chegi declared: “I want to announce here, in the country and everywhere that we are going to appeal to the Constitutional Court in order to prevent Mr. [da Assembleia da República]relying on an absolute majority, turn this parliament into an absolute tyranny.”

The report of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs received positive votes from all the other benches and individual deputies, as a result of which Chega found herself again in isolation, who voted against.

PS MP Claudia Santos considered the initiative “blatantly unconstitutional, as a 65-year prison sentence is the functional equivalent of a life sentence.”

“Our Constitution is a social project of our people, which has brought extraordinary results, it is no coincidence that we are one of the safest countries in the world, and that is why we are here and will be here to protect it,” he stressed. .

PSD’s Monica Quintela defended that Chega’s bill “is a chronicle of an announced initiative” as “when she initiated a life sentence, she immediately announced that if it failed, she would apply for an extension.” [a pena de prisão] for 65 years.”

“Knowing clearly and unequivocally, because he is obliged to know and knows that he is violating the Constitution and wants nothing more than to act in a number of “showcases” to which we are already accustomed,” he accused, praising the President of the Assembly of the Republic rejected the initiative .

For the PCR, MP Alma Rivera defended that “when the bill tries to present itself as something different from what it is, and instead of offering a life sentence, it proposes a prison sentence that exceeds life expectancy, given that criminal liability comes only from the age of 16, we are faced with a cunning way to propose the same unconstitutionality.

The Left Bloc fired with the voice of deputy Pedro Filipe Soares: “It is on the table that we condemn not only criminals, but also opportunists who use these Dante cases for political activities, as is the case with Chega.” .

On behalf of the PAN, MP Inés Sousa Real, who was the author of the report voted by the committee and who joined the constitutional and regimental “inconsistencies” with the Chega diploma pointed out by the President of Parliament, rejected that the current vote was a “political boycott” or “hygiene cord” for the party headed by Ventura, with the accusation of her in the “political theater”.
