More than 900 firefighters fought five active fires on the Portuguese mainland at 11 p.m. this Wednesday, with two fires in the Vila Real area being the most serious, according to civil protection.

According to information available at 23:00 on the National Emergency Management and Civil Protection (ANEPC) website, 930 people were fighting active fires with the support of 315 vehicles.

Fires in the municipalities of Mursa and Chavez in the Vila Real region continue to mobilize additional combat assets, with a total of 894 combat-ready and 306 vehicles.

The fire in Mursa, which broke out on Sunday, has already forced the evacuation of about 300 people from several villages. At 23:00, 756 operatives were mobilized with the support of 262 vehicles.

Most of the people displaced by the fire have already returned home, and housing is undamaged, just “outbuildings and warehouses,” according to National Emergency and Civil Protection Commander Andre Fernandez.

The fire that broke out on Friday in the parish of Bustelo in the Chavez municipality was extinguished at 23:00 by 138 operatives supported by 44 vehicles.

As for people who needed some kind of medical assistance, the figures show that since July 7, 224 assistance has been provided, there are six moderate injuries and three deaths (the same number as on Tuesday).

There were four fires on the permit at 23:00, with a total of 26 operational and seven vehicles.

From July 8 to this Wednesday, the day the most fires were recorded, 193, was the 13th, which was also one of the hottest of the year.

Answering a question from journalists on Wednesday afternoon, the ANEPC commander stressed that the risk of fires in the coming days will remain high and very high almost throughout the country.

Mainland Portugal will remain on alert until Thursday due to fire risk.
