The debate on changing the legal regime for the entry, stay, exit and expulsion of foreigners from the territory of the country led to another parliamentary incident between Chega and the Chairman of the Assembly of the Republic. The Chega deputies even left the plenary during the speech of Augusto Santos Silva, when he answered directly to Andre Ventura, who accused him of not having an exception.
The exchange of accusations followed Santos Silva’s intervention in the form of a derogatory commentary on Andre Ventura’s speech at the debate. He accused the government of wanting immigrants “to come anyway” to our country, while neglecting the plight of the Portuguese: “There are only a few who never have priority in the government’s speech, the Portuguese who have worked all their lives, pay taxes and support the country,” he said, adding that immigrants arriving in Portugal are different from Portuguese emigrating to other countries.
On the other hand, Santos Silva stated that “Portugal owes much, if not much, to the many thousands of immigrants who work, live here and contribute to our welfare.” To this, Andre Ventura replied that the president should “refrain from commenting” on the speeches of the deputies, accusing him of representing the PS in its functions.
In response, Santos Silva stated, “Whenever the prestige of the Assembly of the Republic is at stake, Your Excellency can be sure that I will intervene.” And it was in the midst of this interference that Chega’s bench withdrew, as if to leave the President alone to speak. The protest did not go so well because it took some time for Chega’s MP Pacheco de Amorim to realize the departure of his parliamentary group and later his colleagues on the bench, a ridiculous situation that caused laughter among the MPs. other benches.
