The Chavez fire no longer has active fronts, but is still not considered extinguished.

The fire that broke out on Friday in Chavez’s Bustelo parish no longer has active fronts but has not yet been declared extinguished, Mayor Luce said on Wednesday.

In the afternoon, although the day was quiet, there were “some re-ignitions” that were quickly put down, Nuno Vas explained.

While the fire is no longer burning in Portugal, he said, the fire is still active on the Spanish side where it passed on Monday, which is worth watching as it could re-enter the country.

“The fire is expected to be extinguished at night,” he stressed.

According to information available at 10:30 p.m. on the National Emergency Management and Civil Protection (ANEPC) website, 130 people were still fighting the fire, supported by 42 vehicles.

This fire started at 2:45 p.m. on Friday and was thought to have been stopped in the early hours of Saturday, but reactivation occurred that afternoon and grew larger due to high winds and high temperatures.

Subsequently, on Monday, the flames crossed into the territory of Spain, and the next day again penetrated into Portugal.

Interior Minister José Luis Carneiro announced on Tuesday that mainland Portugal would remain on alert until Thursday due to fire risk.

A high alert situation, the lowest level of response provided for in the Civil Protection Basic Law, is in effect on the Portuguese mainland from 00:00 Monday until 23:59 this Wednesday, taking into account that the temperature dropped after the country had been in seven days was in disrepair.
