A meeting without decisions: António Costa and Luis Montenegro met in Sao Bento

It was a long three-hour meeting, which the Prime Minister described as “a very pleasant conversation, the first of several.”
As for the location of the new Lisbon airport, “no details have been reached” and nothing has been decided, but the prime minister said that “very soon” there will be another conversation between the two.

It was the topic that generated the most curiosity, but António Costa said that the issue only occupied “a small part of the meeting”, adding that “it is an issue that the country has had to deal with for several decades and on which, with the growing demand for travel to Portugal and in particular to the Lisbon region, it is important to have an agreement. This is a topic on which I consider it very important to have consent, but I don’t know if it will be, ”he admitted.

Luis Montenegro did not make any statements after the meeting, but António Costa explained that these were not really negotiations, but rather “an exchange of existing information” and “there was no further progress.”

The prime minister also said that, “in accordance with the responsibilities of the government,” he provided the main opposition party with “the most detailed information” on a variety of fronts, including “the financial issues facing the country.” And “new points of contact” have been created in areas of sovereignty where “regular contacts are needed”, such as foreign and defense policy.
