Like thousands of others, Reza has finally made it. The 21-year-old from Kabul has been evacuated from Afghanistan with his mother and two sisters. How the dramatic action went, how he feels about the Taliban rule and how things are going on for the family now, he knows stern told.
When I saw the Taliban on the streets of Kabul, I was totally shocked and scared. I then quickly called my whole family and picked them up.
He learned from rumors that military planes were waiting at Kabul airport to take people in danger out of the country. So he sets off with his mother and two sisters.
When I got to the airport, I only saw what was going on there. Despite the shots they fired, the Taliban were unable to get into the airport.
When we made it to the airport, the American soldiers took good care of us. Later we came to the terminal.
The US soldiers are supplying the refugees with water, provisions and medication on site. Reza and his family have to endure a whole night until they are finally flown to Qatar on a US military plane at 11 a.m. the next morning. The plastic bracelet that Reza wears on his wrist is a reminder of this – it bears his registration number for the flight.
The flight wasn’t all that bad. It was a modern military aircraft. There were a lot of passengers on board. The space was narrow and the people were all very close to one another. There were no seats. We were all sitting in a row on the floor, the children, the old men, the women – all sat like that.
Meanwhile, Reza and his family are in a refugee camp in Qatar and are waiting for things to continue. He still doesn’t know what to expect for the family.
I’ve heard from a few people that they have been here for over 10 days. But so far there is no information about how things will go on for them or us. Nobody can get on a plane to go to another country. However, many people here believe that they are coming to America. But I would like to go to Germany because my older brother, sister and her husband have been there for several years. I hope that I can come to my family and that we can all live safely together. This is my greatest hope.
