Lisbon PCP Advisers Want Portela Deactivated, Defend Alcochete Decision

The PCP wants the Lisbon Chamber to agree with the government on a timetable for the final decontamination of the airport. Humberto Delgado and accepted the Alcochete test site as the best location for the new airport.

Two communists who are part of the executive branch intend that the “chamber [de Lisboa] authorize their president to initiate contacts with the government in order to determine a schedule for the deactivation of the airport. Humberto Delgado,” adviser Joao Ferreira told Portuguese news agency Lusa on Tuesday.

This is the first paragraph of a proposal that councilors Joao Ferreira and Ana Jara will submit on Wednesday to a vote by the PSD/CDS executive, given that “it doesn’t make sense that the discussion about the future of the airport is taking place – in the square, without the city council Lisbon has not yet taken a concrete position on this issue.”

The PCP acknowledges that the deactivation of the airport will be phased, but argues that it “should be final, given the impact the airport will have on the city, its people, and all those who live and work this Tuesday.” said Joao Ferreira, highlighting the impact “on health, safety and the environment”.

Communist advisers refuse to “continue a situation that has been conditional for 50 years”, since since then the airport “not only has not left” the city of Lisbon, “but has constantly grown until it reached 30 million passengers a year.” ., creating “a situation that is unsustainable”.

“Lisbon cannot and should not continue to bear this burden,” said João Ferreira, who in his proposal also defends the implementation of mitigation measures to be taken until the decontamination is carried out, namely with regard to an effective limitation night flights and city overflights, among other things.

In the second paragraph of the proposal, the advisers want the Chamber to accept Campo de Tiro de Alcochete as the most suitable site for the phased construction of the new Lisbon airport.

“To date, this is the most studied solution of all those that have been put forward over the years, and the only one that currently guarantees the possibility of a phased but final deactivation of Portela,” the adviser emphasized.

With regard to the last paragraph of the proposal, it is that the Chamber is conducting an information campaign on the impact on public health and the environment as a result of the operation of the airport. Humberto Delgado, referring to current and projected future traffic volumes.

The goal is to “raise public awareness of the risks and dangers they are already facing due to the permanence of the country’s main airport within the city, which implies constant low-level overflight of the city by a very significant number of aircraft daily,” said Joao Ferreira, specifying that in 2019 there were a total of “700 aircraft per day, 20,000 aircraft per month” in Lisbon.

The proposal was presented on Tuesday in Jardim do Campo Grande, where during the election campaign the CDU defended the location of the new airport in Alcochet, acknowledging to João Ferreira that this may not coincide with the understanding of the other political forces that make up the executive and that, therefore, the proposal may be put to the vote point by point.

The Lisbon City Council is made up of 17 elected officials, seven from PSD/CDS, five from PS, two from PCP and the remaining three from Livre, Cidadãos por Lisboa and Bloco de Esquerda.
