Councilors opposed to the PSD/CDS-PP leadership in the Lisbon Chamber showed this Wednesday that they are concerned about the difficulties in garbage collection in the city, and socialists criticize Executive President Carlos Moedas (PSD) for declaring himself “innumerable” .
“It’s been a long time since we’ve seen the city so dirty,” said PS councilor Ines Drummond, noting that despite the hardships recorded in the past, the problem is “serious”, “it’s not a one-time issue. and “begins to become more structural”.
In an open meeting of the Lisbon Chamber, the socialist criticized recent statements by the Social Democrat Carlos Moedas about problems in urban hygiene, including calling for the commitment of everyone from workers’ unions to city parish councils.
For Inez Drummond, the PSD mayor’s position is to “return to victimization and hold others accountable” by declaring himself “irresponsible” and “illusionist” by taking responsibility.
Inez Drummond said that in 2019, when PS presided over the executive, the municipality had “fewer vehicles and fewer workers” in urban hygiene, and the city produced more garbage, indicating that in that year, until June 164 years. thousands of tons of municipal waste were collected, while until June of this year 148 thousand tons were collected.
The PS adviser accused the SDP/CDS-PP leadership of a “lack of planning and organization” because “there are no ‘sexual’ measures in urban hygiene to post on social media”, securing support for the socialists to hire more workers in the area and urging the mayor ” focus on the city’s problems rather than making excuses.”
BE councilors Beatriz Gomes Diaz of Livre Ruy Tavares and independent MP elected by the PS/Livre coalition Paula Márquez also questioned the garbage situation in the city.
In response, Carlos Moedas disagreed with the PS councilor’s intervention, saying that the problem of garbage collection “has been around for a long time” in the city, reiterating that it can only be solved if everyone works “together”.
The mayor also assured that, as mayor, he is “doing everything possible to resolve the situation”, including the payment of 18 million euros to the parish councils.
“At the moment, 63 builders have already arrived until July 18, 87 on August 1, 29 on September 1, and then 11 during September,” the mayor said, referring to the hiring of 190 workers on the site. urban hygiene, including 160 new road workers and 30 more vehicle drivers.
The Social Democrat emphasized the “universal effort” to solve the problem and pointed to the need to revise the structural organization in the field of urban hygiene, since citizens do not understand “who does what”, if it is parishes or if it is the municipal council, advocating the creation of groups for joint work.
Carlos Moedas stressed that the council is providing urban hygiene workers with more funds and conditions, such as an unhealthy subsidy, to increase their role in the city and respond to the garbage situation in which unions and parishes are committed, given that the permit is “on a good track” .
BE and Livre advisers also questioned PSD/CDS-PP management about delayed wage payments to approximately 10,000 municipal employees who did not receive their usual 25 this month and received the next day. .
According to the mayor, this delay was due to a “technical error” that was “immediately” fixed, and what happened is being analyzed because “it never happened.”
The chairman of the municipal executive emphasized that “there is nothing political” about the delay recorded in the payment of wages, suggested that “this is a very serious mistake”, and indicated that the municipality is ready to compensate workers who demonstrate that they have been injured, for example. who had a debt to the bank that had to be paid on that day, who “can receive the difference” from the amount due due to delay.
