The debate over the revision of the law on foreigners left Chega isolated this Thursday and caused tensions with the President of the Assembly of the Republic.
The exchange of arguments began after the speech of the Chegi leader during the discussion of the government proposal to change the legal regime for the entry, stay, exit and expulsion of foreigners from the country, three bills from Livre and the initiative He arrives.
André Ventura accused the government of wanting immigrants “to come” to the country anyway, and shot: “There are only those who never have priority in the government’s speech, the Portuguese who have worked all their lives, pay taxes and support the country . “.
The leader of this party even said that immigrants arriving in Portugal are not the same as Portuguese emigrating to other countries. This intervention provoked many protests from several deputies of the semi-cycle and led to the intervention of the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva.
“I must say that, as President of the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic, I believe that Portugal owes a lot, but a lot, to the many thousands of immigrants who work here, who live here and who contribute to our welfare, to our social cohesion, to our collective life, our citizenship and our dignity as an open country that is open to everyone and respects others,” he said, receiving applause from the deputies from several benches, with the exception of Chega.
Then the Chegi leader accused the Chairman of the Assembly of the Republic of being the leader of the Socialist Party, but sitting in a different seat.
Augusto Santos Silva responds to André Ventura by saying that he does not represent the “Socialist Party, but rather the general democratic basis of the Assembly, as defined by the Constitution”. He continues by saying that his most basic function is to ensure the prestige of the Assembly of the Republic, and when this is called into question, he will intervene.
“I’m not impressed by the beats or the volume of the sound,” he continues. Chega interrupted the speech of the Chairman of the Assembly of the Republic, got up and left the Parliament.
“I have dedicated myself to defending democracy for many, many years and will continue to do so for the rest of my days,” he ends without listening to Chega.
