Chega defended this Thursday that “democracy must have a place for all styles of doing politics,” suggesting that the rejection of the plenary session in protest against the chairman of parliament was decided “thoughtfully” despite the “price.”
Chega MPs left the semicircle this Thursday during a debate on the revision of the Aliens Act during tensions with Assembly of the Republic President Augusto Santos Silva.
After this departure, Chega did not return to the plenary session, and party president André Ventura gave a press conference, followed by all the deputies, to explain the reasons for this decision.
“Enough decided today [quinta-feira] leave the plenum of the Assembly of the Republic for a reason which I think was obvious, because Augusto Santos Silva momentarily ceased to be President of the Assembly of the Republic and became a deputy for the PS. What we had today was something I hadn’t even seen with Ferro Rodriguez,” he criticized, citing that Santos Silva “instead of giving the floor to the next party, decided to comment on the submitted bill.”
When asked by journalists whether leaving during the speech of the President of the Assembly of the Republic is a risk to democracy, Andre Ventura replied that “sufficient has its own style of politics”, like other parties.
“This is our style of doing politics, we have known it since the campaign. Democracy must have a place for all styles of politics,” he defended, believing that the style is what “the people know and that’s what they want here.”
When confronted by journalists about absenteeism from the vote at the last plenary before the holidays, President Chega defended that “in all voting it is important to be”, but believed that “there are moments in life and in history that, above all, it is important to take a stand and honor” those who elected the party.
“And those who elect us today [quinta-feira], seeing the behavior of Santos Silva, demanded strict censorship. We did not do this lightly and did not lightly decide together with the leadership of the bench and in full solidarity with the parliamentary group. We decided deliberately and at a cost, and knowing that it comes at a price,” he stressed.
According to Ventura’s analysis, “above tactics, day-to-day voting, day-to-day problems is the observance of the mandates” given by the party.
“Of the half million who elected us, if they could vote, the vast majority would vote and agree with what we have done here today. [quinta-feira]”, he decided.
The Chegi leader also criticized the “childish attitude” of the parties after the departure of their deputies for attacking them when they were not at the plenary session.
