PCP says inflation can only be counteracted by higher wages and pensions

The PKP said this Friday that the forecast for inflation to rise to 9.1% in July shows that it is necessary to raise wages and pensions, as well as control the prices of essential goods, in order to counter the situation that economic groups are taking advantage of.

“The figures that are being put forward for 9.1% of inflation hide what the real values are that we find in everyday expenses, fuel, food, housing, this is a price increase that is not accessible to those who work,” says Communist MP Bruno Diaz , according to a statement released to the media.

The Communist leader added that the registered inflation “does not fall from the sky, it is not a disaster”, but the result of “economic groups taking advantage of the war, the sanctions, the economic crisis”.

From the party’s point of view, the only way to counter this trend is to raise wages and pensions as the only way to “restore the purchasing power of the working people.”

This measure, along with price controls on essential goods, is the only way to prevent “this lack of control” in which “some gain at the expense of almost everyone,” Bruno Dias added.

Since the start of this inflationary cycle, the PCP has been advocating the need for higher wages and pensions and has argued that the updates made to the State Budget for 2022 (OE2022) are not true.

The party also submitted bills to the Assembly of the Republic on setting maximum prices for the purchase of fuel, electricity and gas, and essential goods.

However, all proposals in this regard were rejected.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 9.1% in July from 8.7% in June, the highest reading since November 1992, the National Statistical Institute (INE) estimated this Friday.

According to a quick estimate released by the Statistical Institute, “Based on the information already collected, the rate of change of the consumer price index (CPI) on an annualized basis will increase to 9.1% in July (8.7% in June). “.
