Hundreds of supporters of Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr stormed the Iraqi parliament on Saturday against Iran-loyal Shia Alliance for Coordination candidate Mohammed Shaya al-Sudani, in an action that was criticized at home and abroad.
The new attack comes amid mass protests organized by the cleric’s leadership that began this morning with thousands of protesters taking to Baghdad’s central Tahrir Square, where they chanted slogans against Iranian influence in politics, against corruption and against Al-Sudani’s candidacy.
Al-Sadr supporters surrounded the fortified Green Zone, where most government buildings and foreign embassies are located, and entered it after demolishing the concrete blocks that protected it, a security source told the Efe news agency on condition of anonymity.
