German finance minister calls for phasing out gas to generate electricity

Germany’s finance minister said on Sunday that he is in favor of ending the use of natural gas for electricity generation, avoiding possible supply problems.

“We must work to ensure that the gas crisis is not exacerbated by the electricity crisis,” says Christian Lindner in an interview with Blid, defending the use of other forms of energy.

Lindner stressed that there are many arguments against shutting down nuclear power plants, which are safe and environmentally friendly and can be used if necessary until 2024.

Both liberals and conservatives have already spoken out in favor of extending the life cycle of Germany’s three operating reactors, which are scheduled to close by the end of this year.

On this occasion, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he was simply waiting for the results of stress tests on the electrical system.

Economics and Environment portfolio holders Robert Habeck and Steffi Lemke are open to the possibility of extending the life of reactors for a short period in the event of an energy emergency.

Several people in the Social Democratic and Green parties have already spoken out against such a possibility.

According to data from the Department of Statistics (Destatis), quoted by the EFE agency, 15.2% of the electricity generated in Germany last year came from gas, while nuclear power plants accounted for 11.8%.
