Country chief: Söder complains about “Bayern bashing” from Berlin

There is an “anti-Bavarian mood” in the federal government, criticizes Bavaria’s Prime Minister Söder. At the same time he warns against a “fix and Foxi solution” in the debate about longer nuclear power plant running times.

Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder has complained about anti-Bavarian sentiment in the federal government. “We are trying to work constructively with the new federal government,” said the CSU leader of the “Bild” newspaper (Monday), referring to the G7 summit in Elmau, which took place at the end of June. “Unfortunately, we sense an anti-Bayern mood in Berlin, sometimes even Bayern bashing,” criticized Söder. “One gets the impression that one or the other traffic light coalition partner is humming the song ‘take off the Bavarians’ lederhosen'”.

Söder: There is a risk of the middle class becoming impoverished

Söder was “very worried” about the fall and the high energy prices. “There is a risk of a cold winter and impoverishment of the middle class and average wage earners.” Unfortunately, the traffic light coalition does not have the right concept to protect the country. Söder called for massive tax cuts on energy and food and compensation for increased costs. Instead, gas prices would increase. The federal government must help companies and public utilities in need with rescue packages.

In the debate about longer lifetimes for nuclear power plants, Söder said there should be “no fix-and-Foxi solution” that is only valid for two months. “The head of the Federal Network Agency said that next winter would be at least as dangerous as the coming one. This results in a new term until 2024.”

Kretschmer: Energy transition failed in this form

Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) even called for the lifetimes of nuclear power plants to be extended indefinitely. “As long as the federal government has not developed a new concept for the energy transition, the nuclear power plants must continue to run,” Kretschmer told the “Handelsblatt” (Monday). The deputy CDU chairman declared the energy transition to have failed in this form. “The energy transition with gas as the base load has failed.”

Last winter already showed that production from green energies is often not enough, said Kretschmer. Weather-independent electricity production is therefore essential. From the Prime Minister’s point of view, there is no alternative simply to generate more electricity from wind and sun. The exploding gas and electricity prices are now “a threat” for the business location. “We need a base load capability. It’s crazy to fire up lignite-fired power plants for this,” said Kretschmer, with a view to their CO2 balance.
