Lufthansa pilots demanding higher wages voted this Sunday in favor of a possible strike at the German airline, the union announced, calling the decision an “unmistakable signal” to the company of the determination of these professionals.
A trade union structure called the Vereinigung Cockpit, which advocates a 5.5% wage increase this year and automatic wage adjustment for inflation from 2023, said, however, that the airline could still avoid a shutdown in ongoing negotiations.
According to a union source, in a statement quoted by the Associated Press (AP), Lufthansa “has yet to make an available offer” to pilots in the six rounds of negotiations that have already taken place.
The union stressed that 97.6% of the German airline’s pilots supported the call for a strike, but the vote “still does not necessarily lead to a strike, but is an unmistakable signal for Lufthansa to take the needs of the crews seriously.”
Wage disputes at Lufthansa led last Wednesday to a one-day strike by the German company’s ground staff, organized by another union, leading to the cancellation of more than a thousand flights.
