The Chair of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi has begun her trip to Asia, which has been viewed critically by China. To this end, she met Prime Minister Lee, among others, in Singapore at the beginning. Visits to Malaysia, South Korea and Japan are also planned. Taiwan is not mentioned in the official itinerary of the trip. Nevertheless, there has recently been speculation that this could happen. Sharp words came from Beijing again on Monday. A State Department spokesman says China’s military will not stand by and do nothing should the Speaker of the US House of Representatives arrive in Taiwan. “If US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi travels to Taiwan, it would be gross interference in China’s internal affairs, seriously undermine China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, wanton trampling on the One China principle, peace and seriously endangering stability in the Taiwan Strait and seriously damaging Sino-US relations, leading to very serious developments and consequences.” The government in Beijing regards the island nation as part of China. Taiwan’s status is disputed and one of the main points of contention between the superpowers USA and China. Pelosi has long been a harsh critic of China. According to the Chinese interpretation, a visit to Taiwan would send a signal of hope to pro-independence supporters in Taiwan. The US has no official diplomatic relations with the island nation. Chinese President Xi Jinping recently asked US President Joe Biden to recognize Beijing’s one-China principle and added: “Whoever plays with fire will die in it.”
