The President of the Republic said on Monday in Idanha a Nova that there is a general consensus in Portugal against racism and xenophobia and that there is “no allergy” to the Brazilian community.
“There is a general consensus in Portugal against racism and xenophobia. This does not mean that there are no racist and xenophobic sectors. This means that the vast majority of Portuguese are not,” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa told reporters.
The head of state spoke in Idanha a Nova, in Monte Trigo, during a visit to the 24th National Scout Camp (ACANAC), where he was received by thousands of young people there.
“Because this is a cultural issue, there are always sectors that still show tics or racist and xenophobic traits. It is impossible to generalize to the Portuguese. In Portugal, there is also no allergy to the Brazilian community,” he said.
Marcelo emphasized that the Brazilian community “is growing in Portugal, it is integrated in Portugal. There are hundreds of thousands of them. Many of them have dual citizenship. If it had been bad for them in Portugal, they would not have come.” [comunidade] to the pace that is going on,” he stressed.
The PR emphasized that the existing cases “should be considered as an example” and, “if applicable, punished.”
He also stated that “it is impossible to think that in Portugal there is an allergy to Brazilians and to Brazil. Not”.
Although the case is not mentioned, the Portuguese head of state’s reaction first appeared in a press release, two days after Brazilian actress, model and presenter Giovanna Eubank denounced on social media that her children were victims of racism in a restaurant in Costa . de Caparica.
A family of Angolan tourists at the site was reportedly also the victim of racism by an alcoholic woman who was detained by the authorities but released in the meantime.
In Idanha a Nova, PR decided to discuss the case with reporters after being questioned about the case.
