This weekend, the US carried out a “successful” counterterrorism operation in Afghanistan that killed current al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.
Al-Zawahiri, who succeeded bin Laden, played a key role in the September 11 attacks, which killed about 3,000 people.
According to the White House, the operation in Afghanistan was carried out using a drone. The statement said there were “no civilian casualties.” According to POLITICO, citing a source involved in the action, the drone attack was carried out in Kabul and was led by the CIA.
Joe Biden will talk about the operation on Monday evening.
Ayman al-Zawahiri was bin Laden’s doctor and was very close to the 9/11 terrorist.
Al-Zawahiri took an active part in organizing the terrorist attacks that devastated the United States, and after the tragedy was one of the most wanted people in the world. Shortly after the attacks, the US offered $25 million for information that would allow the terrorist to be caught.
After bin Laden’s death and Ayman al-Zawahiri’s rise to power in al-Qaeda, he topped the FBI’s list of the world’s most wanted terrorists.
Part of the Al-Zawahiri family had already been located and killed during the US operation in Afghanistan in 2001.
