Kabul: Taliban want to have taken over several airport gates

According to the Taliban, they have taken control of several gates at Kabul Airport. The US Department of Defense, however, vehemently denied the takeover.

The militant Islamist Taliban have reportedly brought several gates at Kabul airport under their control. “Two or three” entrances to the airport were handed over by the US to Islamist forces on Saturday night, a representative of the Taliban told the German press agency on Saturday.

The spokesman for the US Department of Defense, John Kirby, had denied such a handover after initial media reports on Saturday night, vehemently and without hesitation. The Taliban controlled neither the airport nor parts of it, nor the gates of the area, said the spokesman for the US Department of Defense on Friday.

Twitter photos raise doubts

On Saturday night, pro-Taliban users shared pictures on Twitter that are supposed to show Taliban forces a few meters behind the entrance to the civilian part of the airport, i.e. within the airport premises. On Saturday morning, too, they shared pictures that showed Taliban forces a little further inside the civilian part of the airport, near the VIP parking lot and the domestic terminal.

When the photos are from is not clear. In the past, the Islamists have repeatedly sent their fighters briefly to known points and had photos taken, for example in order to pretend they were advancing to a certain city on social media and to stir up panic.
