In an order signed on Monday and sent to newsrooms today, Prime Minister António Costa determined that public services could not pay Endesa’s bills without first being reviewed by the Minister of Environment and Energy after the company’s president allowed a 40 percent increase in electricity.
For the IL leader, this “retaliation” is carried out in two ways: on the one hand, by forcing “checking hundreds of accounts every month”, and on the other hand, “by threatening to change suppliers, suggesting that there will be inadequate commercial practices.”
“This is unacceptable, this is the modern version of whoever contacts PS takes it. Arrogance and propaganda are two weapons left to an incompetent government,” he denounced.
According to João Cotrim Figueiredo, the prime minister’s order for an Iberian natural gas pricing mechanism “shows that PS really stands for socialist propaganda.”
“This is propaganda when the government wants to hide that this mechanism allows electricity prices to be reduced compared to European prices at the moment, but will lead to higher prices than in Europe in the future, and the same beneficiaries of these lower prices will be today. who will pay the highest prices,” he accused.
In the order, the prime minister emphasizes the duty of the state to protect the interests of taxpayers in the management of public funds in the face of “threats of speculative pricing practices that Endesa will practice.”
Endesa President Nuno Ribeiro da Silva said on Sunday in an interview with Jornal de Negócios and Antena 1 that July’s electricity bills will increase by about 40% and that the increase was justified by the Iberian electricity control mechanism. the price of gas in the production of electricity.
Following the statements, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action released a statement rejecting Nuno Ribeiro da Silva’s statements, calling them “alarmist”.
After the controversy, Endesa issued a statement on Monday promising to maintain negotiated prices until December and honor the commitments set out in the Iberian Mechanism.
