Against the background of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine, the US government has imposed new sanctions on companies and people close to the Kremlin – including a woman who is said to be particularly close to Putin.
After Great Britain and the European Union, the United States has also issued punitive measures against the alleged girlfriend of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The US Treasury Department said in Washington on Tuesday that it had put former gymnast Alina Kabaeva on its sanctions list. The 39-year-old has a “close relationship with Putin” and is the current boss of the Kremlin-friendly media empire National Media Group. In May, the EU and Great Britain imposed sanctions on the 2004 Olympic champion, who is rumored to be in a relationship with Putin.
The US government also announced sanctions against a number of other Russian figures, companies and institutions on Tuesday. Among them are billionaire Andrei Guryev, head of fertilizer giant PhosAgro, and his son.
Guryev owns the Witanhurst estate in the UK, the second largest estate in London after Buckingham Palace, according to the US Treasury Department. He is also the owner of the more than 80 meter long luxury yacht “Alfa Nero”, which has now been blacklisted by the ministry. Devices tracking the yacht, which Guryev is said to have bought in 2014 for $120 million, have reportedly been turned off to avoid confiscation, the statement said.
“High cost” for Putin supporters
Three Ukrainians who work for the Russian occupiers in southern Ukraine were also put on the US sanctions list. These are the head of the occupation administration of the Kherson region Vladimir Saldo and his deputy Kirill Stremusov. The mayor of the port city of Mariupol, Konstantin Ivashchenko, who was appointed by Russia, was also sanctioned.
The punitive measures came at a “heavy cost” for those who supported President Vladimir Putin’s war, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said. Any possessions of those affected in the United States will be frozen, and US citizens are prohibited from doing business with them. At the same time, the US State Department has imposed entry restrictions on those affected. “While innocent people suffer from Russia’s illegal war of aggression, Putin’s allies have enriched themselves and financed opulent lifestyles,” Yellen said.
Numerous Western countries have imposed harsh punitive measures on Russia for Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. They also targeted oligarchs close to Putin.
