Inside Kremlin: How much influence does Gerhard Schröder have on Putin?

“The turbine can be delivered at any time,” says Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz. A political game, it seems. But Gerhard Schröder, who visited Putin last week, contradicts this thesis in an interview with “stern”. Editor-in-Chief Gregor Peter Schmitz explains what the atmosphere was like during the interview and how the former chancellor sees himself.

“The criticism of his person as a whole does not leave him cold. […] He is one of the most despised people in Germany, some people get up in restaurants when he comes, people no longer want to see him in the golf club,” says Gregor Peter Schmitz in the 332nd episode of the podcast “Today Important”.

The former chancellor is offended by the reactions in Germany and yet he does not break off contact with the Russian president. He wants to keep the conversation channel open and hopes that he might be able to persuade Vladimir Putin to do something. Of course, Schröder also feels flattered by the reception in the Kremlin, says Gregor Peter Schmitz.

“important today”

Sure, opinionated, on the 12: “important today” is not just a news podcast. We set topics and initiate debates – with attitude and sometimes uncomfortable. Host Michel Abdollahi and his team speak out for this star– and RTL reporters with the most exciting people from politics, society and entertainment. They let all voices have their say, both the quiet and the loud. Anyone who hears “important today” starts the day well-informed and can have a well-founded say.

But “Now somehow believing that he as a private person, and one that is on the Kremlin’s payroll at that, that Putin, who doesn’t put up with anything else, is now being told by someone like that, hey, think again, whether that’s a person like that was a good idea, I doubt that very much,” said the “stern” editor-in-chief in an interview with “today important” host Michel Abdollahi.

Schröder as a PR man for Putin?

The statements made by Gerhard Schröder correspond very closely to the formulations of the Kremlin. Gregor Peter Schmitz says: “Schröder always says that the Kremlin also wants a negotiated solution, which he also sold as positive news. If you then take a closer look, it is of course a negotiated solution that is unacceptable for Ukraine.”

You can read the entire interview with Gerhard Schröder, which is the first authorized conversation with the former chancellor since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, in the current issue of “stern”.
