Four weeks before the federal election, the SPD is in the “Sunday trend” for the first time since February 2017 in front of the Union.
Four weeks before the general election, another poll sees the SPD with Chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz as the strongest force. The Social Democrats win in the “Sunday trend” for “Bild am Sonntag” two percentage points compared to the previous week – with 24 percent they are now well ahead of the Union, which comes to 21 percent (-1). According to the newspaper, it is the lowest value that polling institute Insa has ever measured for the Union. The Greens stay at 17, the FDP at 13 percent. AfD (11 percent) and Left (6 percent) each lose one point.
Even with the polls of the Chancellor candidates, things are looking increasingly bleak for the Union: For Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet (CDU) in a direct election this week, according to the “Sunday trend”, only 10 percent would vote (-2). Green candidate Annalena Baerbock wins one point and comes to 14 percent. Scholz would still be at the top with 31 percent – despite a minus of 3 percentage points for the SPD candidate.
Also in other polls SPD ahead
The SPD had also recently gained ground in several surveys by other opinion research institutes. A survey by YouGov and the “trend barometer” created by the Forsa Institute for RTL and n-tv also recently saw the Social Democrats in the lead. In Friday’s ZDF “Politbarometer” the SPD and Union were on par with 22 percent each.

Election polls are generally always fraught with uncertainty. Among other things, declining party ties and increasingly short-term voting decisions make it more difficult for opinion research institutes to weight the data collected. In principle, surveys only reflect the opinion at the time of the survey and are not predictions of the outcome of the election.
