Leipzig suffers from heat wave: How the city could get cooler

Dense development, lots of asphalt, too few street trees – Leipzig suffers particularly from oppressive heat, a new heat map shows which districts are most exposed. Of the star spoke to Jürgen Kasek, 41, the environmental spokesman for the Greens, about how cities can become cooler.

Mr. Kasek, are there still cool places in Leipzig at the moment?
You have to go out into the floodplain forest, which is one of the largest floodplain forests in Europe. Or to the lakes in the south of Leipzig, which were created from the opencast mines.

How did the city feel this week?
An oppressive heat stands in the street canyons. The lawns in many parks are burned, trees and bushes are completely drooping. A lot of treetops are weakened, I also see a lot of dead trees now.
