While the people watched the TV triall on the big screen, they entered their questions about the candidates: inside on the small screen in the search engine. Data from Google Trends shows what they wanted to know.
On Sunday evening, the top candidates: from the Greens, CDU and SPD, face the first major television debate: Annalena Baerbock, Olaf Scholz and Armin Laschet were guests at the TV triad from RTL and n-tv. While the politicians were pestered with questions by Peter Kloeppel and Pinar Atalay, the TV audience entered questions about the three on Google at the same time. What people wanted to know can be seen in data from Google Trends.
Top 5 Google Trends on Candidates
The data shows which search queries for the three candidates shot up during the broadcast in Google Trends compared to their usual search traffic. In all three, the seekers were interested in the vaccination status and the salary. In addition, various inquiries were made. In Annalena Baerbock’s case the main interest was whether she has (she has) children, where exactly she lives and how big she is. In addition, questions about the car and the job of the Green politician were among the rising inquiries.

At Armin Laschet, users also wanted to know which car they are driving. With him, too, in the top 5, the question about the children and the place of residence came up. In further search queries, users wanted to know what the Union candidate studied or learned and also what he had in his mouth during the broadcast: “What is Laschet chewing?” was also a trending search on Sunday evening.

With Olaf Scholz, questions about place of residence and income were also at the top of the trend searches, and it was apparently not clear to everyone in the audience which party he belongs to: “Olaf Scholz which party” was typed in the search field significantly more often than usual. In addition, quite a few apparently wanted to know where Scholz was once mayor. The right answers: SPD and Hamburg.
