Terrorist expert Guido Steinberg talks to him star about the assassination attempt on al-Qaeda boss Al-Zawahiri, the Taliban’s dilemma and a new terror threat for Germany.
Mr. Steinberg, a few days ago, a US drone killed al Qaeda chief al-Zawahiri. Did it surprise you that one of the most wanted men in the world could live in Kabul just like that?
no It was known that senior al Qaeda personnel were in Afghanistan. Secret services had already pointed this out in a UN report in June. Still, it is surprising that the al-Qaeda chief was brave enough to move to Kabul, where he expected the US to still obtain intelligence information. In my view, this is an indication of the great self-confidence with which al Qaeda has operated since the Taliban won last year.
